If you receive reading instruction from Mr. Wyman, click here for his blog which contains your reading assignment. This is in place of the reading assignment below; you do not need to do both.

Writing - Read the writing prompts and choose one to complete. After completing the prompt, please illustrate your piece. Pieces may be typed or handwritten.

Spelling - Use the materials provided in the paper copy of your blizzard bag for these assignments.  Cut out and sort the word cards (archer/endure) and sort them into three categories- nouns, verbs and adjectives. Copy the sort onto the "Sort It" worksheet. Remember- some words may fit into more than one category.
Also, please complete the paragraph editing page included in the paper copies you received for blizzard bag day one.

Science - Today you are practicing a science process skill, observation. Choose a subject (the weather, family member, pet, etc.) to observe three separate times throughout the day. Five-minute intervals should be plenty. Be sure to make detailed, factual observations in order to complete data collection sheets supplied.

Social Studies - Go to this website. On this site you will see links to the stories of five young people who have recently immigrated to the United States. Choose two of the immigrants who interest you and read their stories. Then, complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting their experiences.  Remember to give your Venn diagram a title and to label each of the large circles.

Blizzard Bag Day 2

MathToday you are to complete 20 minutes of
IXL. Next, you need to solve these problems.

Reading - Read for 30-45 minutes from a quality independent novel.
This book should be a 'just right' level for you. Click on the reading link to find reading questions to complete. Answer the five questions that you did not answer on our first Blizzard Bag day.

If you receive reading instruction from Mr. Wyman, click here for his blog which contains your reading assignment. This is in place of the reading assignment below; you do not need to do both.

Writing - Choose a different writing prompt (than our first Blizzard Bag day) to complete.
After completing the prompt, please illustrate your piece. Pieces may be typed or handwritten.

Spelling - Use the materials provided in the paper copy of your blizzard bag for these assignments.  Cut out and sort the word cards (vital/civil) and sort them into two categories, words ending in -al, and words ending in -il or -ile. Copy the sort onto the "Sort It" worksheet.  Also, please complete the paragraph editing page included in the paper copies you received for blizzard bag day two.

Science - Today you will conduct a variable experiment using ice cubes. You will need four similar ice cubes, and one teaspoon each of sugar, salt, and pepper. If you do not have a teaspoon of any of the powdered substances, check with an adult at home and substitute in a different powdered substance. Make a hypothesis about which ice cube you think will melt fastest. Take the four ice cubes out of the freezer. Put them on similar dishes. Leave one plain, that is your control. Put a teaspoon of salt on your second ice cube, a teaspoon of sugar on your third, and a teaspoon of pepper on your fourth. Use this to make an observation every ten minutes. Be sure to record the time it takes for each cube to completely melt. Remember, independent variables are causes, or things that are tested to see if they are causes. Dependent variables are the output, effect, or result of something.  In this experiment, the time it takes each cube to melt depends on what, if any, substance is on the cube. So, which is the dependent variable, and which is the independent variable?  Be sure to include this in your write-up. This will help you organize your work. Write a conclusion summarizing your results. This rubric will be used to score your write-up.

Social Studies - Current Events. Find a current event article from a newspaper, magazine, online, etc. on a topic of some interest to you. The article should be relevant to a wider audience, rather than just local news. Be sure to read the article in its entirety. Complete the questions on this worksheet.
